The Gyotaku Process

Step 1

Begin your journey by catching a fish. Once you’ve successfully caught a fish, take a moment to celebrate your achievement. This is your “grip and grin” moment – hold your fish firmly but gently, and smile proudly for a photo. This snapshot will not only serve as a memory but also as a reference for your gyotaku art.

Step 2

Bring your catch to our studio for the initial gyotaku print. We’ll take care of the rest. This process involves delicately applying non-toxic ink to your fish and pressing it onto high-quality cloth, capturing every intricate detail. Rest assured, your fish will be cleaned and preserved.

Step 3

With the initial print completed, our artists will begin adding the finishing touches to bring your gyotaku art to life. We meticulously enhance the print by adding fine details, such as the scales, fins, eyes and any unique markings of your fish. If you have any specific customizations or requests, this is the perfect time to let us know.

(If you can't get the fish to us immediately, we recommend gutting it and keeping it on ice for 1-5 days for best quality. If you need more time, you can freeze the fish and bring it to us frozen.)

Step 4

Done. We will contact you to arrange the delivery/pick-up of your beautiful gyotaku print. Your gyotaku print is now ready to be proudly displayed in your home, serving as a beautiful reminder of your fishing adventure and a unique piece of art that celebrates the beauty of nature and the artistry of gyotaku.
